Shi En Unforgettable-Those things taught me by my mentors in those years
The mentor is very important to the growth of graduate students, especially when graduate students choose to develop in the professional field of their master's or doctoral degree. As the old saying goes, Chollima often has it, but Bole doesn't often have it. Meeting a good mentor will change your life; of course, meeting a bad mentor will also change your life, but these two changes are in opposite directions.
Since I was admitted to the Master of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Sun Yat-Sen University in September 2007, I have been working hard for 14 years under the guidance of the rhetoric of "The 21st century is the century of life sciences". Fortunately, along the way, I met three outstanding graduate tutors who changed the trajectory of my life. The first one is my research tutor, Professor Qin Qiwei, who is also my first choice graduate tutor to apply for the master's degree. Those who apply for Master Qin’s postgraduates should thank Brother Xiao Cui for his recommendation. Brother Xiao Cui is really my senior brother. We studied at the same university for undergraduates, and graduate students are the same tutor. This wonderful fate continued until we all ran. Go to the United States to do post-doc. Brother Xiao Cui is particularly outstanding, and now he has been promoted to PI in the United States as a faculty member. Brother Cui told me back then that Teacher Qin was upright and upright, had outstanding academic ability, and was kind to students. He would definitely not be wrong. With the recommendation of my senior brother, I courageously contacted Teacher Qin, who was already a "National Outstanding Youth" at the time. In fact, I didn't know anything at the time, and I didn't know what "National Outstanding Youth" meant. I thought Teacher Qin was young. Promising, full of charisma, the key is tall and mighty (at least 185cm), and a sense of security. If you are lucky enough to worship him, this life will definitely be fine. I am very grateful, Teacher Qin didn't dislike me, so I got on the bus fortunately. Teacher Qin is a well-known expert and scholar in the fields of marine molecular virology and fish immunology. He is now the dean of the School of Oceanography at South China Agricultural University. When recruiting troops, I strongly recommend teachers and students who are determined to develop in this field to take a look at Qin Lab. You will never be disappointed, and there will be surprises.

During my two-year master's career in Qin Lab, I learned a lot of basic literacy for scientific research, and laid a solid experimental and theoretical foundation in the direction of biochemistry and molecular biology. At the same time, I also left a lot of deep memories and influences. Moments of my entire research career. One of them was when I was going to transfer to a Ph.D. in the summer of 2009. The generous teacher Qin gave me this precious opportunity to read the master and Ph.D., but unfortunately, due to the change of work, Mr. Qin had to be transferred to the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Director of the Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Biological Resources and Ecology, I cannot follow my teacher to continue to develop in the field of marine molecular virology. To this day, my email is still mvirus008@163.com. The origin of this email is marine-virus. It was the first time I ran to register after I was notified that I was admitted. The name of the mailbox is very strange. Later when I went to study in the United States, I was often argued by foreigners that the letter you sent by this email looked like a virus email. I always just smiled, thinking in my heart that you wouldn’t know what I was back then. With a heart of innocence. When I was about to transfer to the blog and leave the laboratory, my mood
It's very complicated. Teacher Qin found me and said the following words that have affected me until now, and it will continue to affect me. He said: Your kid has a good head and has a lot of ideas, but you still lack practicality. You have to learn from Brother Xiaowei on this point. It is the key to work hard, and you must not be too arrogant. After going to the Songyangzhou teacher's laboratory, you have to work hard and don't make people laugh. These few words have never been forgotten by students, and now I often tell my lab students, don’t be superior and inferior. Execution is very important. Do things carefully, and the details determine success or failure. Teacher Qin is upright and kind, and is willing to help students grow. Later, I learned from the doctoral tutor, Professor Song Yangzhou, that if there was no recommendation from Teacher Qin on the phone, I would probably not get to study at Songyangzhou. Valuable opportunity for blogging.

As the first and only Ph.D. recruited by Sunny after returning to China, I was flattered and pressured. In the face of such an excellent tutor, I don't think I deserve to be straightforward. I still clearly remember the scene of his improvisation interview with me. Sunny: "What experiment have you done?" Me: "Immunofluorescence of cells, look at the changes in the cytoskeleton after the virus infects the cell". Sunny: "Have you encountered any problems during this experiment"? Me: "Fortunately, sometimes when you find that the green fluorescence is strong, you can see the signal under the red channel, as if the color is crossed." Sunny: "What do you think caused it?" Me: "Maybe the spectra of the fluorescent groups of the two secondary antibodies overlap"? Sunny: "Did you think of a way to overcome this problem"? Me: "...Uh, change the antibody"? Sunny: "If you don't change the antibody, do you have other options"? Me: "...Uh..." Sunny: "Think about it again, haven't you already mentioned the possible cause of the problem just now"? Me: "Uh, yes, contact the engineer and ask him to adjust the detection wavelength of the channel to avoid the overlapping area." Sunny: "Actually, there are many solutions. You can find out by yourself. What I want to tell you is that you must develop the habit of proactively solving problems, divergent and think more." Me: "Understood, thank you teacher". Sunny can always inspire you inadvertently, this is just one of the small examples. At that time, I felt that my performance in the interview was very average. He should look down on me and did not dare to report too much hope. Until one day I suddenly received a call from him telling me that he had decided to admit me. I will always remember the feeling at that moment. It's like God closed a door for you but opened a window for you. Anyway, suddenly the whole person was like chicken blood. If it rained heavily, I would definitely Rinse out and drizzle on it.
Later, there were too many stories, I think I could write serials. When Sunny was a PhD student, the first author published Nature and Cell, and won the 30-year Best 30 Article Award of Cell Magazine. After independent PI, the communication published a series of Top articles such as Nature, which established himself in the telomere regulation mechanism, Position in the field of aging and regeneration. Sunny felt that I had put a lot of effort into the new laboratory. As a laboratory master, I must postpone my graduation. He couldn't bear it, so he sent me to Professor Chen Junjie from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as a doctoral exchange. The student visited for 2 years and successfully completed my doctoral dissertation. Encountering Sunny was an important turning point in my life. In addition to his open scientific research resume that convinced me deeply, he also worried about my personal future planning and development. When I meet a good mentor, I really need to know how to cherish it. I am very lucky.

I met a few good mentors at once, and I am especially grateful to the teachers for their selfless help, guidance and training. The students will also remember their teachings and work hard to pass on the virtues of cultivating students.

It will be Teacher's Day in less than three weeks. I write this thought to earnestly thank the instructors who have trained me. I think that I can drink water and think about the source. The teacher is unforgettable. I should be a young teacher who is relatively late among the many students trained by these three teachers and needs to work harder to repay the teacher’s grace and give back to the society. I also hope to take this opportunity to inspire more young students. The road to scientific research is very good. Hard work, don't waste time and waste precious time, take dreams as horses, live up to your youth, and work hard to realize your dreams!
